Mounting Substrate DescriptionsRigid Substrates - Indoors OnlyAlthough the following rigid substrates can be used outdoors for very short durations, they are not water- proof and are not outdoor-recommended. Foam BoardRigid, lightweight and our most economical mounting substrate. A polystyrene foam sandwiched between outside layers of clay coated paper. Applications. Mounting of exhibit graphics, posters, signs, rigid banners, presentation graphics, photos,, and other graphics that need stability. Can be attached to other surfaces with hook and loop. With a cardboard easel mounted to the back, it can be displayed on table tops
Gator BoardGator board has a center core of extruded polystyrene foam sandwiched between layers of wood-fiber veneer. It is much stronger and more durable than foam board. In fact, a saw is needed to cut it gator board. Applications. Serves the same purposes as foam board, but is created for long term because of its strength and durability and resistance to warping.
Sintra (PVC)Sintra is a rigid poly vinyl chloride (PVC) type of very durable foam board. It resists dents and warping and is waterproof making it ideal for outdoor use. Although it is often used for for very tall graphics mounted in rigid banner stands, it will have a "bowing tendency" under its own weight particularly under windy conditions. For taller, more narrow graphics, it is best to use the 1/4" thick sheets. Applications. Just like foam board and gator board, it is used to mount signs, posters and banners. Its durability is great for longer term installations and is well-suited for outdoor use, particularly in high traffic areas and under conditions that require a lot of handling
